In all his years in the army, Lord Gabriel Winters never once would have described an opponent as beautiful. But when he finds himself staring down the barrel of Miss Amelia Watson's pistol, it's the only word that comes to mind. Despite her clear distrust of him - and not to mention his own determination to avoid English women at all costs - Gabriel is more than intrigued by his friend's bold neighbor.
Amelia has plenty of reasons to distrust strangers, and the broad-shouldered, devilishly handsome viscount deserves no exception. But when he challenges her to lay down her weapon and learn to fight in a new way, she finds herself capitulating. He may be a scoundrel, but he's also the first person in years to look at her without the blasted pity she hates so much.
Though the lessons start out innocently enough, the heady pull of attraction soon gets in the way. They're as incompatible as water and gunpowder, so why is she suddenly looking forward to the thought of being...Scandalized by a Scoundrel?
Scandalized by a Scoundrel An All Fair in Love Novella (Audible Audio Edition) Erin Knightley Laurel Schroeder Books
I enjoyed the corny, sweet, fun of the first book in this series, Ruined by a Rake, so I immediately forked out the 99 cents for this novella (the other was free). In this story, the hero is a good friend of Nicolas Norton (the hero from Ruined by a Rake), who is getting married. I was excited to see Nicolas and Eleanor again, but unfortunately, they were relatively flat characters in this novella.I enjoyed the story, the H/h misty morning meetings, and their misunderstandings. I typically get irritated with misunderstandings, but this made sense and furthered the story. The self defense training scenes were fun to read and I enjoyed those the most (the hero teaches the heroine how to defend herself if she cannot draw her pistol-her past explains why she carries one).
Overall, unlike Ruined by a Rake, which was simple enough to suffice as a novella, I thought this story could have been fleshed out to a full length novel. Many things were explained in the epilogue that could have been shared in a full novel (and then the author would have had time to revisit the previous characters and flesh them out more!)
Anyways, this was still a fun, easy read and a sweet way to spend 99cents. I will be looking for more by this author. 4 stars.

Scandalized by a Scoundrel An All Fair in Love Novella (Audible Audio Edition) Erin Knightley Laurel Schroeder Books Reviews
This novella is exactly what one wants in a period romance, it has nicely developed characters, an interesting premise as a hook, and then travels along a brief story line at a pace that is engaging yet thorough for the story to develop. It weaves an enchanting tale without as much material as a full novel.
Great clean sweet romance for Lord Gabriel Winters & Miss Amelia Watson in this novella. Both complemented each other well similar temperance of character & "fighting" skills one in hand to hand combat & other excelling in pistols. My heart wrenched to Watson's sad state of her life with her dad...felt she was unable to wed/ have a love life. Then comes along half-American Winters, with a lovable amusing, teasing character to turn epitome English lady, Miss Watson's world upside down.
Although character development was enjoyable, however, wished Knightley could have added more of the romance between the protagonists, after they open their hearts to each other. Overall, enjoyable fast read.
I've read some of this author's work and appreciate the fact that she creates different characters in her stories. This one is about a vulnerable yet strong h who meets the H in quite unusual circumstances, where she threatens to shoot him for trespassing. They have a few interesting encounters where the H is more often than not an ass to her. Ah well this is why I read romances and the author does a good job in a short space of time. Best of all she doesn't rely on sex scenes to unfold the story.
As an avid reader of romance novels, I found the fact that the heroine was the character with the tragic past needing to be overcome was refreshing. Also, the fact that the hero helps her do so by building her self-confidence and not by romancing her. By the end of the story, these are two characters who are equals. At first, I felt that Gabriel relinquished his desire for vengeance on his family a little too quickly, but upon further reflection, I have decided this is actually a good thing. On the one hand, it felt like the tension existing between them resolved too quickly. However, I feel this is a part of Gabriel's character that Amelia needed. Someone who is more invested in a hopeful and loving future than one of vengeance and anger.
This was a rather fun novella. I really liked that Amelia was a very strong female heroine and that we didn't know her tragic story right away, giving us a chance to get to know her as she is NOW, just as Gabriel did. I also truly enjoyed the fact that Gabriel had something to teach her, even though she was strong. She certainly isn't stupid either, she just doesn't realize how vulnerable she is even with a pistol constantly carried in her pocket. I loved seeing him draw her out of her shell by teaching her how to defend herself - and that she ends up getting to save herself as well (although, of course he contributed).
This is an unusual romance, but a rather delightful one. Def recommend for the price!
Gabriel was born in England to a Lord and to his 2nd wife who was an American heiress. The Lord's first wife died in childbirth after producing two children. He was almost impoverished and his marriage gave him money to fix up properties and provide for all the family. However when the Lord died he and his mother were shipped back to America. They were never thought good enough for the family. There were two boys to inherit before Gabriel. But they both died bringing Gabriel back to receive the title.
Adele was an 18 year old girl who had never been far from.home. Her mother died when she was a young girl by robbers. The coach was stopped and her mother refused to give up her mother's jewels. She was killed amidst the gems as well. Her father was almost paranoid and would not go out after dark nor let his daughter go. She did not receive her season in London. She learned to shoot and took care of the household though they had servants.
Then one morning she caught a man trespassing and whipped out her gun and didn't flinch. She found out he was here for the neighbor's wedding. They talked though she was a bit Rude to him. He had been a soldier and volunteered to show her some defensive maneuvers. Adele was annoyed because he found out what happened to her family. He was determined go go to America to get a wife eventually as he wanted go rub his relatives' .does in it a bit as they had treated his mother so badly. He wasn't' t looking for a wife as mama's push ed their debutante on him. Adele didn' t plan go marry because of her father's feelings about her being protected. Yet there was an attraction there. They seemed to be offended about their situation a at every meeting. She had a need to use the defensive techniques he taught her.
This is good story and you will enjoy it. I did.
